Gramm: “Type Zwei” (Personal_Rock, Source 1999)

Gramm is a project of producer Jan Jelinek (Farben, Exposures, Groupshow) who released Personal_Rock in 1999 on Move D’s Source label. It landed during the microsound clicks + cuts zeitgeist of the turn of the century, harnessing the power of distinctly digital editing and glitchy sounds but still fueled by Jelinek’s talent for smooth, cross-genre ease, with elements of post-rock, dub, IDM, and more. So while other acts from the same time may feel severe by comparison, there’s something warm, intimate, and, indeed, “personal” about Jelinek’s own sublime “rock.” The album just got a long overdue re-issue by Jelinek’s own newer Faitiche label — a great thing, because it’s still one of my favorites of his repertoire to date.
