Uwe Schmidt’s latest as Atom™ (perhaps best previously known as Atom Heart or Señor Coconut, though he’s the brain behind over 70 other projects!) is described by him as “Hard Code Pop.” What does that really mean? That Schmidt is crafting electronic arrangements that become pseudo-songs by virtue of the N1X vocal software providing lyrics and vocals on most of these tracks. The vocals are clearly synthesized, and they usually provide a melodic lead (“0.9 – Almost a Unit”) or peripheral details to the tracks (“#”). Like many of Schmidt’s best releases, it’s extremely focused in its approach, palette, and ideas, feeling both concise and like a thorough, deep dive of its own ethos. It’s hard to pick a favorite, since each track feels like excerpts of a whole, but the track that perhaps best sums up the experience for me is “Tech Talk,” equal parts self-explanatory, humorous, and sonically interesting.
