Machinedrum: “Countchocula” (Urban Biology, Merck 2002)

Machinedrum’s earlier albums are imbued with more of a turntablist spin on hip hop and downtempo, often filled with scratching or skittering vocal cut-ups that feel akin to his contemporary Prefuse 73. While his most recent music feels right on time with its spry footwork rhythm kits, this album still sounds just as fresh to me now as it did the first time I heard it nearly 15 years ago.
