Funkystepz: Special Delivery (Club Soda)

“Special Delivery” starts off with a crisp garage rhythm track, like many other tracks by Funkystepz (though thankfully they left off their project name this time). KT’s vocal lends it more of a pop flavor than I typically have associated with them in the past, but that’s not a bad thing. By the time her vocal has completed a verse, it’s chopped up and triggered in syncopation in a way that recalls Todd Edwards, DJ Q, or MK. The bassline is killer, though, and that’s really where it’s at — punching through the track with a really nice sense of clarity. It has just the right amount of stuff going on and a good, clean mix.

The other two tracks are not as pop-tinged, with “Moruga Reloaded” anchored by a dry, slightly slower house beat and UK funky synths and disembodied, cloudy whispers. “Flexin’” flips it back into a garage mode, with another fun bassline and a clean mix that feels like a slightly darker and shorter companion to the opener. I wasn’t personally as moved by the 2nd cut, but both the first and last ones are definitely well worth a listen.
