Henryk Górecki: Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 6 (1990)

Górecki’s first piano sonata is one that he wrote over a quite long period of time. In fact, it sat in waiting for about thirty years before he finally polished it in 1990 as a proper completed piece of music. Its bombastic first and third movements bookend a stark, hushed center movement. I’d never heard this one until recently, when it blew me away. This accomplished performance by Hayk Melikyan should be heard to be believed.
