Ricardo Villalobos: “Sieso” (Achso, Cadenza 2005)

Hard to believe time is flying by so fast that Achso is nearly 10 years old already! And yet Villalobos sounds at the very top of his game here, balancing between the vaguely pop flirtations of his Alcachofa album (“vaguely” being the operative word there) and the fully-off-the-deep-end sprawl of material that’s followed since this.

Despite its leftfield wanderlust, “Sieso” is very much a dancefloor thumper when it gets going, its wayward guitar playing a freeform counterpart to the tightly crafted rhythm section that anchors the track.
