Biosphere: “Novelty Waves” (Patashnik, Origo/Apollo 1994)

Biosphere’s 2nd album Patashnik just got a reissue, and this cut is as unlikely one as ever. I’ve never heard him sound so straightforward, but it’s got its finger on the pulse for its time, despite the rest of the album sounding more akin to the ambient electronica he’d pursue more headlong eventually. It was a rare moment in time that he and Aphex Twin sounded like kindred spirits before each went off in quite a different direction.
