David Ross Benson: Found Material (David Ross Benson)
Benson is one of the first kindred musical spirits I met when I first relocated to Portland. He did a nice minimal remix of Microfilm on our Blips Don’t Lie EP under the alias Nine Devices. Found Material is a CD he’s produced on his own, and it’s well worth a listen for its subtlety and variety. The common thread throughout these tracks is their warmth — everything suggests a human touch and feels inviting. Many tracks include droning atmospheres and looping textures, sometimes serving as the underpinnings of a track and sometimes hanging overhead like an added warm layer. Whether he’s channeling the most downtempo crinkly grooves of ~scape (“Let Glow”) or something more pulsing and deliberate (“Altitude Check”), Benson’s aesthetic is warm and consistent. Subtle and unassuming, this is music that takes time to settle in… give it some time and it is likely to move you.
