Tangerine Dream: Phaedra (Virgin 1974)
Phaedra was the first album Virgin Records released worldwide. In the massive sprawl of Tangerine Dream’s discography and history, Phaedra remains one of the most appreciated and revered, and understandably so. Its spacey improv and arrangements were way ahead of its time, and the UK took notice: the album reached #15 on the UK charts (!). Phaedra was also the first Tangerine Dream album to feature Christopher Franke’s signature undulating sequencer patterns (effectively replacing bass guitar with its rhythm and sound), not only defining their identity for many years to follow but also making waves with some genuinely new and strange sounds. (I’d intended on only posting the first cut, but only album rips are on YouTube, so enjoy!)
