Stefan Goldmann: “Métallique Resonator”
Originally developed for the Ondes Martenot electronic instrument in 1928, the “Métallique” is a musical loudspeaker construction with a brass / metal surface as a membrane, stimulated by an electro-magnetic driver. Here is a custom-built reincarnation of this principle with a pierced cymbal and a handful of electronic components. All audible sounds are captured by one microphone only. The level of bass in the signal depends mostly on the degree of contact with the wooden board underneath the “Métallique.” Also note how dampening the surface alters the sound response dramatically.
Listen with headphones to hear the nuances.
Post processing: compressor, tube interface, bass enhancer, phaser set at 4% mix ratio.
