Einstürzende Neubauten: “Armenia” (Halber Mench, 1986)

A Facebook thread reminded me of how significant the music of Einstürzende Neubauten has been to me formatively. Hearing about them and then acquiring Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T., their 1983 album, when I was a teenager was a revelatory experience. The notion that ALL sound could be musical, visceral, physical, was something new to me at that young age. “Armenia” was always one of my personal favorites — rife with angst, melancholy and a kind of fatalism into which the band only occasionally really dove headlong. This performance of it that kicks off their Halber Mensch film from the mid 80s captures it well.
