Dream Continuum: Reworkz (Planet µ)

Dream Continuum is yet another spin-off of Travis Stewart’s prolific Machinedrum project. This time he pairs up with Jim Coles a.k.a. Om Unit for three cuts of furious footwork R&B-flavored jams. “B Free” hinges itself on a pitched up vocal hook… but don’t let the smooth intro fool you, the two really lay out some frenzied beatmaking through the majority of this track. It’s a perfect blend of current footwork and mid-90s jungle breaks. “Giv a Lil Luv” is even more of a pure ultrabeat throwback, mid-90s rave to the T with just the slightest contemporary touch to polish it. It has that old skool euphoria about it, an uplifting refrain of synth stabs and frantic breaks within a wider halfbeat structure. Rounding it out is “Set It,” which starts off infused with some dancehall vocal samples and a more leisurely pace. But as is the case with most of these, the two can’t sit still for very long, and their mischievous knack for complex polyrhythms and a fusion of breaks and footwork low-end takes over.
