Guy Andrews: Shades/Textures (Hemlock)
These two syncopated, percussive post-dubstep tracks from Andrews deliver the goods on the ever-reliable Hemlock imprint. His clattering, crisp percussion arrangement on “Shades” almost obscures the subtle but lovely pads and atmospheres underneath. The rhythmic sensibility reminds me of kindred spirit Joe, whose records on Apple Pips have a similar energy, moving in a comfortable tempo with lots of woodblock, rims and bright snares. “Textures” picks up right where “Shades” leaves off, sounding more like two parts of the same track than distinctly separate ideas. Recommended for those looking for house-tempo post-whatever tracks for mixing, but also quite nice as standalone listening.
