Bass Clef: Rollercoasters Of The Heart (Punch Drunk Music)

Hackney-by-way-of-Bristol producer Ralph Cumbers put together this jaunty 2-tracker for dubstep-etc label Punch Drunk recently. It’s an uplifting combo of tracks, with the more immediate of the two being the A-side, “Rollercoasters Of The Heart,” a rousing, up-tempo funky anthem. Its chords recall the heyday of 808 State et. al, but the rhythm tracks are spot-on for the 2011 post-dubstep set. The use of vocal fragments in a rolling, looping style like The Field add a liveliness that befits its title. The 2nd track, “So Cruel,” has a less abstracted vocal, looping fragments and phrases. It takes the garage and old-school sound of the 90s and filters it through the current trend lens, with some of the broken beat cadence and half-beat intrigue of some of Hyperdub’s more melancholy artists — not half as grungy or gloomy as Burial, but not as lively as the full-on 2-step revival of L2S.
