Pariah: Detroit Falls (R&S)

The R&B sample that kicks off “Detroit Falls” is disorienting. The first time I heard it, I thought there was a mistake with the download from iTunes… and then that glorious stutter that launches into a thick, heavy-handed slab of chunky future R&B goodness! It’s perfect. There’s not a whole lot to say about it outside of its greatness — check out the clip and it will speak for itself. The B-side “Orpheus” is also quite good, falling more in line with the up-tempo half-beat pulse of Pariah’s other recent material. It’s propelled by an urgent kick but has a nice gloomy synth pad as the main hook, egged on by vocal samples and synth stabs. Really nice stuff, two great cuts that complement each other well.
